There was a Procession in León, on Sunday August 21, with the Statue of Our Lady of Merxy. This Procession was carried out by the Archdiocese of Managua, whose Patron Saint is Our Lady of Mercy herself. The faithful gathered, numbering hundreds came out to honour this special Procession carried out annually.

This Procession took place amidst the restrictive Acts of the tyrannical regime of Daniel Ortega against the Catholic Church in numerous Cities of the Country, especially in Matagalpa, where Bishop Rolando Alvarez was kidnapped.

The Procession began by 8:00 am, after the image was blessed by the Pastor of the Sanctuary, Rev. Fr. Mauro Paniagua.

Crowds of faithful, Clergy Men and Women and a musical band, processed to the Acosasco Fortress, an old military fort on top of Hill Acosasco, which is protected by the municipality and used as a weather station today.

At about 1:00 pm the image arrived at the Fort, and Holy Mass was celebrated, which was presided over by Rev. Fr. Paniagua. At the end of the celebration songs were performed in honour of Our Lady of Mercy.

An hour later, the image returned to its sanctuary accompanied by the crowd.

Our Lady of Mercy was proclaimed patron saint of León on July 17, 1912 by it's then Bishop, Mons. Simeon Pereira y Castellón.

The Diocesan Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy houses the image of the patron saint, brought centuries ago from Barcelona (Spain) by the order of Mercedarian friars.
