Saint Januarius' blood liquefies

On the afternoon of Thursday, December 16, 2021, the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Januarius, venerated in the Cathedral of Naples, in Italy, was repeated.

Many faithful had remained expectant and in prayer, because during the morning and after Holy Mass, the miracle did not occur.

According to information, when the Abbot of the Chapel of Saint Januarius in the Cathedral, Monsignor Vincenzo De Gregorio, opened the safe containing the relic of the Saint, around 9 in the morning, the blood was completely solid.

The reliquary was placed on the High Altar at the end of the Holy Mass and there it remained there throughout the day, waiting for the miracle of liquefaction to be repeated, which finally happened at 6 in the evening.

The prodigy of December, the last of the three ceremonies in which the blood is traditionally liquefied each year, is also known as the "secular miracle" because it is usually performed in the Chapel of the Treasury of Saint Januarius.

Saint Januarius

Saint Januarius, patron of Naples, was bishop of Benevento. During the persecution against the Christians, he was taken as prisoner along with his companions and subjected to terrible torture. One day he and his friends were thrown to the Lions, but the beasts only roared without approaching them.

They were then branded as using magic and sentenced to be beheaded near Pozzuoli, where they were also buried. This happened around the year 305.

The relics of Saint Januarius were transferred to different places until they finally reached Naples in 1497.

The blood of Saint Januarius, which is preserved solid in a reliquary, usually liquefies three times a year: on the first Sunday in May, on September 19 (Feast of Saint Januarius) and on December 16, in memory of the miracle produced by the intercession of Saint Januarius, who avoided a catastrophe after the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 1631.
